Always have a Plan B

Updated: May 8

I will set the scene. The Sunshine Coast has not been living up to its name lately and we have had more wet days than dry. My very first job as a Wedding Celebrant on the Sunshine Coast was a beach wedding. In the afternoon in a gorgeous spot-on Shelly Beach, Caloundra, right next to the water under a beautiful tree.

What could possibly go wrong?

Not only was it raining cats and dogs with a gale force wind barreling down the beach, but we also had dangerous surf conditions. Not the best conditions for a beach wedding.

Luckily my lovely couple and I had talked strategy around the possibility of the weather not behaving and had come up with a Plan B. We executed this Plan B on the day and the wedding proceeded without a problem and without the bride, groom and celebrant getting wet.

It is really important that you consider the weather when you are organising your wedding ceremony. The weather is really one element you can't control. If your ceremony is being held at a venue, speak to them about the wet weather option and what is avaialble. If you are planning a wedding on a beach, in a park, in a field on a mountain - you need to factor in a Plan B.

There are a lot of things to consider with an outdoor wedding:

  • will it be too hot?

  • where will the sun be, and will my guests be looking into the sun on a hot sunshine coast summer afternoon?

  • will it be too cold? will it be too windy? will our guests be able to hear our ceremony?

  • If it has rained and the ground is too muddy - what do you do?

  • can I bring in seating, shade, shelter for my guests?

So much to consider and plan for. Another thing to consider is if you do have to revert to Plan B on the day - who will let your guests know. This is a big consideration because you will both be pretty busy on the day and won't want to be sitting on the phone all morning. Work out a communication strategy to simplify your day.

This is something I can help you with and will be happy to discuss options and ideas with you when you are planning your wedding.

Happy wedding planning.
